After a tooth has been lost and the lack of stimulation that normally hits the jaw bone caused by chewing, the bone can start to deteriorate. It is also possible to experience bone loss in the most severe stages of periodontal disease. When bone density is lost and a patient wants to take advantage of our permanent restorative procedures, we need to graft the bone back to its original form so the restorations will have a sturdy foundation.
Bone grafting involves transplanting healthy bone to repair or rebuild damaged or deteriorated bone. The dentist will make a small incision where the graft is needed, then attach the new bone to the original, deteriorated bone. Once the new bone is placed and surrounding tissues are sealed around it, new bone cells are created around the transplanted or grafted material to strengthen and build the bone.
Once the new bone has fully fused to the original bone and the surgical site has healed, we will work together to move further into your restorative treatment plan.
Periodontal disease or gum disease is a gum tissue infection caused by poor oral hygiene to remove plaque. Once plaque has built up and hardened, an infection in the gums starts and spreads if not removed immediately. In the most severe stages of periodontal disease, our gum tissue starts to recede and fall away from the tooth, causing tooth loss.
When the gum tissue becomes severely infected and has receded, to promote healing, the removal of the infection is necessary, and new gum tissue is to be placed. In the gum grafting procedure, we will remove healthy gum tissue from a non-infected portion in the mouth and sew on the tissue where the recession has happened.
Gum grafting promotes healing and restoration after experiencing severe periodontal disease and gives the patient a natural, beautiful smile.
